Learn Korean Numbers

This page covers the Sino-Korean number system (일, 이, 삼…), which is the system used for large numbers, dates, money, and phone numbers.

Digits: 0–9

  • 0 = 영 (yeong)
  • 1 = 일 (il)
  • 2 = 이 (i)
  • 3 = 삼 (sam)
  • 4 = 사 (sa)
  • 5 = 오 (o)
  • 6 = 육 (yuk)
  • 7 = 칠 (chil)
  • 8 = 팔 (pal)
  • 9 = 구 (gu)

10–99: tens

(sip) means 10. The system is fully regular:

  • 10 = 십
  • 11 = 십일
  • 20 = 이십
  • 35 = 삼십오
  • 99 = 구십구
Quick check: 15, 42, 78?

15 십오 · 42 사십이 · 78 칠십팔

Hundreds

(baek) means 100:

  • 100 = 백
  • 200 = 이백
  • 500 = 오백
  • 321 = 삼백이십일

Thousands

(cheon) means 1,000:

  • 1,000 = 천
  • 2,000 = 이천
  • 5,678 = 오천육백칠십팔

Large numbers: 만 (10,000+)

Like Japanese, Korean groups in units of 10,000 (만, man):

  • 10,000 = 만
  • 100,000 = 십만
  • 1,000,000 = 백만

The Sino-Korean system is very regular — once you know the digits and place values, you can build any number.
